Buying furniture online doesn't have to be a risky venture if you take a few steps to make it a safe purchase. It can save you hundreds of dollars, depending on what you're planning to purchase.

Suppose you want to buy a new dresser and nightstands for your bedroom to replace that stuff you've had for twenty five years or bought at a yard sale and never intended to keep this long.  Begin a general search online for bedroom furniture. You'll get thousands of hits from your search engine. Check out a few of the online stores that have a vast array of bedroom furniture for sale.

When you find something that you like, narrow your search and bookmark the site. Maybe you find traditional solid cherry appealing. Start searching with that criteria. It takes some time to whittle it down, but hey, you're going to be saving money here.

Now you've found a brand name that you love in a price range you can afford. Do another search using the brand name and the model name and number. You'll be surprised how much the price will vary from one online store to another. You don't have to check out every possible source, but do keep digging until you find at least five offers you can live with.

Don't forget to factor in the cost of tax and shipping if applicable. Often it's difficult to determine where the online business is located. Knowing that will help you decide who to buy from. If the guy with the best price is located in Portland, OR and you live in Baltimore, MD, it might be wiser to pay a bit more per item from an online firm nearer to you and less for the cost of shipping. Always figure the total expense. If it's free shipping, you're in tall clover. Go for the best deal.

You're about to invest a sizable chunk of change in a pretty picture. You don't know how well it's made or what it looks like in person. It might have a funny looking foot that you hadn't noticed from seeing it on your monitor. That funny foot could be something that you couldn't live with for a long period of time without wanting to scream every time you glanced its way.

This is the time to go visit some "brick and mortar" stores in your area. Armed with the brand name and the model name and number, it shouldn't be too difficult to find what you're looking for. You may think this is sneaky but the salesperson does not need to know that you're doing research.

When you're satisfied with your choice and the quality, go home and call the online store that has the best price. Engage the person on the phone in conversation and ask a lot of questions. If the person you're talking to doesn't seem informed, ask to speak to someone who is more knowledgeable.

You want to know if they have it in stock, or if it must be ordered how long that will take.  When can it be delivered and by whom? Will it be dropped off on the pavement outside your three story house or will the delivery people carry it to the room where it belongs? Will the delivery people wait for you to check for any damage? If there's damage, what is the online store's policy? Is there assembly required or some assembly required and what does that entail? A reputable online store will have the answers to all these questions and more. Don't settle for less than you want to know.

Some assembly required usually means putting the knobs or pulls on the doors or drawers. Installing hardward can be done with a screwdriver or a tool that's included with the hardware. Assembly required means that you have to build it. The top, sides, bottom and shelves will be nicely stacked inside flat rectangular cartons. There will be a mind-boggling array of unfamiliar doodads with an instruction sheet telling you and showing you with line drawing how to put the thing together. If you can read and understand directions and have a logical working mind, you'll be able to do the task. Don't be afraid. If stuff like that eludes you, don't buy it in that condition unless you know a handy person who can help you do it.

Assuming you're happy with the information you've received, go ahead and order it. Ask for a confirmation number sent to you in an email that outlines what you've ordered and the terms you've agreed to. Save the email and print it. Delete the email and toss the printed page only after the product is delivered, the credit card bill has arrived and you are totally satisfied with the whole transaction.

With all the money you've saved, treat yourself to a new comforter and draperies to make that newly refurbished bedroom really shine.
